Now that you have reached the UK to pursue your studies, the next step is finding gainful employment, so you can pay for your classes or have money to spend around town. Before you set out to find a job, you’ll need to answer the following questions;

The good news is that if you can package the skills that you offer, it will be easier to find the right job for you. From general skills to the computer, time management, and problem-solving, there are plenty of skills that UK employers are seeking, you must package them properly. Here are a few more tips that will help you land employment in the UK.

Get Permits in order

You’ll need to have a Tier 2 visa to gain employment. If you are an international student and studying Undergraduate or Master program with internship or placement you can get an internship at a company as a part of your course,  a Tier 4 visa is required. Be sure to have them ready before you start working for the company. If you are full-time DBA or PhD student you can work as part of your course in your research field.

Career Service Team

Every university in the UK offers a Career Services office that provides you with the right guidance in finding employment. They will usually have a list of jobs available, tell you where to look for additional employment opportunities, and how to fill out your application form so you highlight the right skillsets.

Job Websites

There are numerous job websites and directories that list available work, starting with LinkedIn which you should have an account. There are many other websites as well, offering a myriad of job opportunities that include Post Study, a site dedicated to international students to find a job in the UK, to graduate recruitment fairs that are held frequently which offer job opportunities.

Make Yourself More Employable

This means that you may want to find part-time employment first and then work your way up to full-time. If you can afford the lower salary, part-time brings you the experience needed to then land a better full-time job. You can also volunteer if there is no suitable part-time work available which provides even more experience.

Graduate Employer

If you enter the Graduate Scheme, there are two ways to do it;
– Direct Entry: You have a cover letter and CV inside the company, followed by an interview over the phone before the final interview. Usually, this is the start of an internship or full-time employment.
– Graduate Scheme: Perfect for those who have little to no full-time experience, the contracts for such employment last from 3 to 6 months and up to 3 years. If you are looking for hands-on experience, this is generally the way to go.
